We enjoyed a few days of relaxation. One night we decided to escape the tourism and eat at a local haunt. The GPS took us right to Hunt’s Oyster Bar. The line of hungry patrons almost wrapped around the entire building. The window decor featured crude paintings of drunken sea creatures holding adult beverages.
We discovered that there was a two-hour wait for a table and a one-hour wait for the bar. Donna, the drink chick, kept all of us entertained as we sweltered in the humidity. She was the queen of the oyster bar. In that world, she knew everyone and everything.
Suddenly, a woman in a convertible drove by. Two giant parrots perched on the roll bar. Donna said, “Well, I’m glad she found ‘em. One flew off last week, and they found one of them birds settin’ on the courthouse stairs.”
Holmes can’t stand to just sit and wait. He evaluated all the choices around him and fixated on a building across the street. “Momma, don’t you and Caroline get those spray fake tans? You should get a touch up. Just walk across the street. We’ll wait on you.” I tuned him out and continued to fan myself. Once again he tried to convince me to visit the business across the street.
Holmes kept talking about the place across the street. I looked at Thomas who had a smirk on his face. They were both up to something. Then I looked at the sign on the building: Tan Fannies. Both Thomas and Holmes had a good laugh since it was definitely not a tanning salon.

I realized on that trip how precious and few our family moments were becoming. Soon our children would be absorbed in serious relationships, jobs that might take them far away, and families of their own. What a blessing to enjoy that part of our lives as a family, just having fun.
The Prom Creature Is Slain
All families experience monumental occasions: births, deaths, weddings, and The Prom. The Prom introduces mothers and daughters to the enchanting world of appropriate fashion, patience, and all the amenities that accompany this first official hoopla—revered as a milestone in maturity. I learned an unexpected lesson when I began to see Caroline’s prom through her eyes and respect her view. I also celebrated that evening in a delightfully creative way—minus the perfect dress, shoes, bag, jewelry, etc.
A few years ago, I had a speaking engagement in Texas. The person who introduced me at the luncheon stood up, and to my surprise, said, “I’m looking for a size eight and a half, three-inch-heel acrylic sling back shoe with a T-strap, with or without rhinestones. If any of you ladies can help me, I’d appreciate it.” Then she added with a quiver in her voice, “My daughter’s prom is this weekend and we cannot find the perfect shoes.” Without missing a beat, she continued, “Our speaker today is originally from Johns Island, South Carolina .
